Background & Expertise

Freelance Nutrition Writer and Researcher

I have written articles, peer-reviewed academic papers, books and chapters of books on nutrition, sustainable diets and micronutrients. You can find my most recent work in the Publications Section

Lecturer and presenter

I lecture at undergraduate level on sustainable diets. Most recently I have lectured at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth, Cardiff Metropolitan University and Plymouth University. I give talks to local food organisations. These have included Food Festivals and Transition Groups.

Local Food Networks

I am Chair of the Abergavenny Food Forum, Vice-Chair of the Vale of Usk Local Action Group (LAG) which oversees the management of Rural Development Programme (RDP) funding in Monmouthshire and the rural areas of Newport and a member of the Abergavenny Just Food Group.

BSc Pharmacy, Manchester University

I qualified as a pharmacist and practiced as a community pharmacist for 25 years. I worked as a training officer at the National Pharmacy Association, as an editorial assistant on the British National Formulary and as a senior editorial assistant on the Pharmaceutical Journal. I remain a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

MSc (Distinction) & PhD Nutrition, King's College London

I used my nutrition knowledge and expertise in the education of community pharmacists and their staff to help them provide healthy eating advice to their clients and patients.

My PhD research was a clinical study evaluating the effect of high fibre diets on mineral absorption in human beings.

MSc (Distinction) Food Policy, City University, London

During this period of study I became interested in the impact of diet on the health of the planet as well as human and social health. My research evaluated the cost of a healthy basket of food shopping at different outlets in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire
